Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?

Reiki originated in Japan, by Dr. Mikao Usui. In translation it means spiritually guided life force energy. Reiki is a beneficial healing modality that is very popular and is utilized for health and wellness. It is based on energetic principles and is practiced in many hospitals, medical settings, and in private practice all around the world.

What is a Reiki Healer?

Not just anyone can call themselves a Reiki Healer. Professional Reiki Healers must complete a series of courses, beginning with Reiki Level 1, often continuing through Reiki Level 2, then onto the Reiki Master Course and practicum. Some Reiki Healers choose to continue their education to become Reiki Master Teachers, where they can empower others with healing through Reiki.

How long is a Reiki session?

A session is generally between 60 - 90 minutes, with the first appointment being the longest.

Will I be lying down on a massage table or sitting?

Reiki performed on a client who is fully reclined comfortably on a massage table. If you have mobility or pain issues please communicate these to your Practitioner so they may make you comfortable for the session.

Am I clothed during my Reiki session?

Yes. You will want to wear loose fitting comfortable clothing for your Reiki session.

Will the Reiki Practitioner’s hands touch me in any way?

It's your choice. There are standard hand placements beginning at your head or feet, avoiding all sensitive body parts. Let your Practitioner know prior to the session which you prefer, light touch or no touch.

Is your first session the longest?

Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early so the practitioner can go over the session, discuss your goals for the session, complete paperwork, etc.

Is one session enough or will I need a series of sessions?

You will see for yourself how Reiki makes you feel. Many people, after trying one session, find that it is relaxing, gives a feeling of more clarity and sense of wellness. Many people go on to purchase a series of sessions to progressively work on their current wellness goals.

Is Reiki for an acute condition or a chronic condition?

If you have an acute condition you should seek out a licensed medical professional immediately. If you have a chronic or current issue, Reiki can be an excellent complement in your health or wellness plan.

What will I feel during the session?.

Most clients feel a sense of relaxation and peace. The mind may feel calm and your physical body should feel relaxed. Reiki is so relaxing that sometimes clients may fall asleep during the session. Don’t worry, you will still receive all of the benefits of the session, sleeping or awake.

Is there talking during the session?

Usually a session is done without talking and the practitioner may have soft ambient music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation. If you want to communicate something to your practitioner during the session, such as if you are cold or too warm, if you would like them to adjust the music, if you are feeling a sensation you would like to discuss, if something feels uncomfortable for you, if you have a question or issue, then do speak up at any time during the session.

Your practitioner wants the best for you and wants to make your session the best experience possible. Also, your practitioner may ask you after the session if there is anything you would like to share and you may do so at your option. This is good feedback for your practitioner’s notes for planning your next session.

What does Reiki healing feel like?

During the practitioner’s hand placements, you may feel a very slight tingling, heat, energy, or nothing at all. You may feel a peace and calm in your mind or body. It is different for all clients but deep relaxation is almost always felt.

After I leave my session, should I do anything special?

Please drink plenty of water to hydrate and support your body’s energy system, which may be moving at a more optimum rate. Care for yourself with healthy food during the day to reinforce the Reiki healing. It is beneficial to spend some quiet time that day or evening, after your session, to journal or to contemplate any insights gathered during your session. There can be development of further mental clarity as your body continues to process the Reiki session.

Are there any medical conditions where I should not receive Reiki?

Reiki is a wonderful complement in a health or wellness plan. It supports your work with your primary care providers. Please see the IARP web site at  http://iarp.org for articles on Reiki and how it may be of benefit with medical issues, pregnancy, life stages, and more.

If I have the flu or a contagious disease should I have a Reiki session?

No. As a kindness to your Practitioner please wait until you are feeling better and not contagious before scheduling a session.

Do I tip my Reiki Practitioner?

Tipping is at the client’s discretion. If you felt you had a beneficial and caring session, then you may wish to show your gratitude.

Can you have too much Reiki?

Reiki is beneficial and works with your body’s energy so there is never a fear of ’too much'. In fact, your own energetic body is in control of how much Reiki it wants and needs during the session and utilizes it accordingly. Like breathing, you will comfortably take in as much as you need to support you.
